The project involved converting a former Safeway building into a completely new grocery destination. King Retail Solutions took on the challenge of creating a brand identity, store planning, lighting, fabrication, and installation. The goal was to exemplify the market position of "affordable fresh" and provide a playground of fresh ingredients for shoppers.
The design concept revolved around creating a feeling of an urban fresh market, with each department acting as a boutique within the store. Standalone bakery, deli, and meat butcher shop areas were designed to give an authentic sea-front farmers market flavor. Thoughtful and visually appealing displays dedicated to each food destination became a major part of the design.
To enhance the street market persona, the design team incorporated various custom fixtures and materials. For example, the Soup & Salad Bar Island featured corrugated steel and wood grain, topped with a Caesarstone countertop. Throughout the store, simple and rustic materials were used to create an authentic and inviting atmosphere.
The exterior remodel of the building required approval from the neighborhood, which was overwhelmingly positive. The design received praise from the community, with comments expressing excitement and anticipation for the store's opening.
The color concept of surgical white, crisp black, rustic textured materials, and vibrant colors found in nature's kitchen adds to the overall integrity and appeal of the design. The lighting concept was carefully planned to provide dramatic and ambient illumination, showcasing the plethora of fresh ingredients available.
Despite the challenges of not being able to survey the store before starting the design process and working within an expedited timeline, King Retail Solutions overcame these obstacles by working quickly and efficiently. The result is a beautiful and solid design that captures the essence of a street market while providing a unique and enjoyable shopping experience.
Fresh St. Market, with its focus on freshness, locality, and aesthetic, has successfully created a grocery destination that resonates with the urban foodie and the local community. This design, recognized with a Silver A' Design Award in 2014, showcases the expertise and innovation of King Retail Solutions, setting a new standard for grocery store design.
